HIVE-FX brings to life the creatures of NBC’s Grimm
Earlier this summer, Jim Clark, president of Hive-FX joined Imagineer Systems at SIGGRAPH 2012 to talk about howmocha Pro fits into their vfx pipeline. Hive FX is a boutique VFX, animation, and live-action shop based in Portland, OR. For the past two years, Hive FX has been busy bringing to life some of the scariest – and most technically challenging – moments of NBC’s hit series, Grimm.
Tracking face replacements and morphs are part of Hive’s deliveries for NBC’s Grimm.
In his presentation, Jim talks about the challenges his team faces on a daily basis keeping up with the creative and technical demands of a show as VFX-laden as Grimm.
“At Hive FX, we handle upwards of 250 shots per season on Grimm, with every single sequence touched by mocha Pro and After Effects,” added Jim Clark. “Just about every sequence we do for Grimm is shot handheld and in very low lighting and with very little, to no tracking data. These conditions would make ordinary trackers go crazy!”
A typical week at Hive FX has them managing anywhere from 20 – 40 shots, so the deadlines are intense and the expectations high. “Typically we have 3 weeks to complete upwards of 40 shots on 2 -3 episodes simultaneously,” Jim continues. “But with mocha in our pipeline, we’re able to work very quickly, with non-existent data and get very clean tracks! We’re always surprised at what we’re able to solve with mocha.”
Hexenbiest is a recurring character in Grimm.
All the compositing in Grimm is done with a combination of After Effects and mocha, with mocha heavily relied upon for 2D tracks. For the show, mocha has become the team’s solving tool as they’re able to easily export all the tracking data to After Effects, and even to their 3D tools to help solve all their 3D and CG scenes – and in Grimm, layering CG images over mocha tracks is prevalent!
“Before mocha Pro, it would take us around 3 days to complete a single track,” Jim concludes. “Now with mocha Pro, we’re completing 2 – 3 tracks per day! We simply couldn’t do this show without mocha.”
