End of Year Wrap-Up: 2016 in Post

December 21, 2016 in Blog,News

Well, it has been quite a crazy and intense year for many – including the team at Boris FX! Before we completely wrap up 2016, we thought that it would be fun to shine a quick light on some of our favorite stories from our world of post-production and VFX. Please take a moment to check it out and have a wonderful 2017!  -Ross Shain, CMO, Boris FX

YearWrapUp

2017 Academy Awards: Best VFX Nominees

oscarsvfx

Most recently, The Academy of Motion Pictures announced the nominees for the Best VFX category and we are excited to say that almost every single VFX studio who worked on the nominated films uses both mocha Pro and Sapphire.

A hearty congratulations goes out to to all the artists at Framestore,  Illoura, ILM, Hybride, Luma Pictures, Method, Crafty Apes, Cinesite, Double Negative, Image Engine, MPC, Milk VFX, Rodeo VFX, Weta and Laika. No matter who wins, we are extremely proud to have you all as customers!

September 2016: Plug-in Worlds Collide (GenArts Acquisition)

While attending IBC in Amsterdam this year, it was very fun to make the announcement that Boris FX (parent company of Imagineer) acquired GenArts, developers of widely popular Sapphire plug-ins. While this news took many customers by surprise, the transition has been quite smooth and we have been enjoying working with new colleagues in our Boston office.

What does this all mean? The combination of Boris, Imagineer & GenArts is bringing together some of the top minds in software development and design; all focused on editing, graphics and visual effects. We shared a brief merger FAQ in November and are looking forward to releasing major new features and versions of your favorite tools in 2017!

Sapphire 10

As one of the original plug-in packages for Flame, Media Composer and After Effects, Sapphire has made an impact on literally thousands of films, commercials and TV shows for over 20 years. Also announced in September, Sapphire 10 was released with some very cool new filters and features. To accompany this release we have been cranking out tons of great new Sapphire tutorials videos with pro trainers, such as John Dickinson of Motionworks.net.

Check out John’s video on Sapphire Builder which is an advanced node-graph style compositor built into the effect interface. If you have not looked closely at Sapphire in while, now is the time.

mocha: New hosts, GPU & Plug-in

For many years, mocha has been a well-loved tool in the VFX industry – used by After Effects, Flame and Nuke artists for rock solid planar tracking, deep roto tools and the amazing object removal module. In June of 2016, we launched mocha Pro 5 which is probably the most significant release in Imagineer’s 15 year history.

With excellent help from the Boris FX team, mocha Pro has been made into a plug-in that will run inside almost every host application in editing and post (including Avid). Supporting editing systems like Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere has long been a popular request from our customers. Adding plug-in capabilities, plus new GPU accelerated tracking and OFX/Adobe improvements, has made v5 a huge hit.

Check out Mary Poplin’s Top 10 Plug-in features video below and lots more mocha 5 videos here.

360° Video and VR

Speaking of mocha, it would be crazy to think about 2016 without mention VR. The promise of “Virtual Reality” has been a buzz for years in post and tech, but the mass availability of VR headsets and viewing platforms pushed 360 video and VR over the edge this year.

Our friends at The Molecule worked on Invisible, one of the first scripted, episodic 360 video series. Directed by Doug Limon and produced in collaboration with Jaunt and Samsung. Check out the article at CGSociety and watch here.

360 video is a challenging learning curve for the post industry and our goal is to help reduce some of the technical issues introduced in this new format. Our first 360 enabled product, mocha VR is now in beta and is planned to ship early in 2017. Here product manager, Martin Brennand shows how mocha VR’s new tools will help make 360 finishing and effects tasks much easier.

If you are actively working in 360 and want to beta test mocha VR, please contact us

2017: To Continuum and Beyond

Well, that is about it for this quick wrap up. On the Boris front, the team is actively working on some very cool new features for Continuum. In the below video, we share our most recent Webinar Replay – a monthly series that brings high quality training, tips and techniques to the industry.

We could not leave you at the end of 2016 without restating the shared mission of the teams now working under the Boris FX umbrella: to develop best of breed, task specific effects tools and plug-ins that assist the post-production process.  Or more succinct – Tools thats help editors and artists be more creative and hit their deadlines.

Boris FX and GenArts Announce Significant Merger of Industry-Leading Visual Effects Software Companies

September 9, 2016 in News

Plug-in leader Boris FX acquires Sapphire tools and team to become the powerhouse in post-production software industry

Boston, MA, USA – September 9, 2016 - Boris FX™, the leader in integrated VFX and workflow solutions for video and film, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire GenArts Inc., developers of premium special effects plug-ins. GenArts’ renowned flagship product, Sapphire™, is a gold standard for high-end visual effects creation at leading film studios and broadcast facilities around the world. Since 1996, Sapphire effects have been used in at least one of each year’s VFX Oscar-nominated films, and numerous award-winning television shows. Sapphire will continue to be developed and sold in its current form alongside flagship products Boris Continuum Complete™ (BCC) and mocha Pro™, creating the industry’s most powerful complement to applications from Adobe, Apple, Avid, Autodesk, Blackmagic Design and others.

The acquisition is part of Boris FX founder Boris Yamnitsky’s aggressive growth strategy. Boris FX most recently acquired Imagineer Systems, the UK-based developer of mocha: Academy Award-winning planar tracking tools.

“We are excited to announce this strategic merger and welcome the Sapphire team to the Boris FX/Imagineer group,” says Yamnitsky. “This acquisition makes Boris FX uniquely positioned to serve editors and effects artists with the industry’s leading tools for motion graphics, broadcast design, visual effects, image restoration, motion tracking and finishing — all under one roof. Sapphire’s exceptional suite of creative plug-ins has been used to design many of the last decades’ most memorable film images. Sapphire perfectly complements BCC and mocha as essential tools for professional VFX and we look forward to serving Sapphire’s extremely accomplished users.”

BorisFX_Sapphire_Mocha

“Equally impressive is the team behind the technology,” continues Yamnitsky. “Key GenArts staff from engineering, sales, marketing and support will join our Boston office to ensure the smoothest transition for customers. Our shared goal is to serve our combined customer base with useful new tools and the highest quality training and technical support.”

The Sapphire team agrees on the value the merger will bring to the industry. “I’m excited about what a combined Boris FX/Imagineer/GenArts company can create,” states Gary Oberbrunner, Chief Scientist and VP of Engineering at GenArts. “We are impressed with the collaborative integration of mocha technology in the recent BCC10 release and look forward to exploring similar technology sharing and product improvement opportunities.” Oberbrunner continues, “All of us share a passion for innovation, quality and creativity. Combining resources and knowledge, and working with our amazing customers, will enable us not just to continue the pace of innovation we’ve had separately, but to move even faster, creating entirely new effects, tools and combinations to delight our users.” Oberbrunner will now join the Boris FX senior management team as Chief Technical Officer for the combined group.

Longtime users of Continuum Complete and Sapphire are now sharing positive first impressions of the announcement:

Seth Buncher, Senior Finishing Editor at NYC’s Post Factory, recently completed the color grading and finishing on ESPN’s acclaimed mini-series “O.J.: Made in America.” According to Buncher, “BCC and Sapphire have been part of my finishing tools for over 10 years. I use Sapphire to create unique looks and BCC’s image restoration tools to help salvage and fix problematic footage. Both packages are essential to my finishing workflow on Avid Symphony and DaVinci Resolve, so learning that my favorite plug-in developers are joining forces is exciting news. I look forward to more BCC/Sapphire/mocha developments in the future.”

Yuhei Ogawa, longtime Sapphire user and current editor at Trailer Park in Hollywood, is thrilled at the announcement and all future collaborative possibilities. “Boris, Imagineer and GenArts joining forces is a colossal move for the post-production industry. Here at Trailer Park, we use all three products on a regular basis and they are a big part of our success. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this new plug-in powerhouse.”
